Why do Tamilians become intolerant when they are asked to learn Hindi?

I am one of those proud intolerant Tamilian, who gets irritated when some illiterate so called nationalist come up with ‘Hindi is our national language’ crap. These are the reasons(which we Tamilians are telling you folks for 60+ years and we’ll keep on saying until you fed up):

1. India is a not a ‘Nation’. Use this link to understand the difference. And when India is not a nation it obviously need not to speak one language. ‘Unity in Diversity’ is what we have been thought from our childhood and but we don’t use that phrase just for the sake of it. Instead we use – ‘one nation, one language, one religion’. Look into the history and see what Vallabhai patel and Nehru did to ‘create’ this country. All the press around the world were writing “India is the greatest social experiment ever done”. It means this country has been brought together under one umbrella, as an experiment, with 40 crore Indians back then. It is/was the greatest social experiment and we Tamilians feel proud of that.

2. ‘While you’re in Rome be a Roman’. Yes we Tamilians don’t hesitate to speak in Hindi in a Hindi speaking state. I am from a town called Sivakasi in Tamilnadu, which is famous producing crackers. Sivakasi is one of the largest supplier of fire crackers to the entire country and people from my town travel all over India to get orders for crackers. And 99% of them speaks fluent Hindi and many other prominent languages. Were they thought in the school? Of course not, it is practice and it is ethics of doing business. If you move to a new place for your business, then you should learn the local language and speak to them in their language – that is ‘being a roman’. We follow that without anyone teaching or reminding us regularly. But what happens when a North or west Indian lands in Tamilndau? The first words would be – ‘Why you guys don’t speak Hindi?’. In any way this is ethical?

3. The greatest myth – ‘Hindi is our national language and you SHOULD learn and speak it’. For the millionth time we’re requesting you to read something on this and come up with proof. Here is one of the proofs on why Hindi is NOT our national language. If India is not a national language, then obviously it cannot have a national language.

4. ‘Tamilians do not know Hindi. They hate it and they’re not thought as well’ – really? No, I studied Hindi in a private Tuition and also in school. I passed four exams in hindi prachar sabha. I can read/write/speak Hindi fluently. 90% of my Tamil friends know Hindi, atleast to the point that they can listen and respond. 30% Tamilians in my current workplace knows Hindi and often they brag about their Hindi fluency as well. Actually I like Hindi, especially as songs. It is one of the beautiful Indian languages and its poetic nature is heart-warming. I speak to Hindi folks only in Hindi when I am in their states like MP, UP, Delhi etc.. I love to learn their slangs as well. It is unique and fun to learn.

5. ‘Tamilians are intolerant’. Hell no. You have not seen real Tamilians. We, as any other society have accepted changes and evolved really well. See the total non-Tamil population in Chennai – which one of the largest populated city in Tamilnadu(1 of every 7th person in TN lives here). Also see the other parts of the state where Telugu people lives heavily. It was Madras presidency before Independence and we had people from all 5 southern states lived here. All southern Indian films were shot in Chennai. For every rupee we pay as tax, we only get 0.44 Rs. And we’re very well aware about it that UP gets more than 4 Rs in equivalent. But nobody complains here, because we know that UP was and is feeding us with their Rice & wheat for a long while and they’re one of the developing states.

6. We’re intolerant with Hindi being forced on us really hard when it is of no use to us. Yes it is no use to us. Early during 80’s and 90’s it was mentioned that ‘Learning Hindi would land you a job in North or West India, so learn it’. But what happened really, the entire North population is migrating to south India now. Banglore, Hydrebad, Chennai – look everywhere you can see people from all parts if India. People migrating to another place in search of economic prosperity. North Indians come to TN and asks us to learn Hindi. Really isn’t this hilarious. If you come to a new place, then you should learn the local language. It is not us who’re coming to your place and intolerant to learn your language. But instead it is you who’re intolerant to learn something new. And this migration is going to be severe in future due to many effects like population, climate etc.. and entire south India is ready to ‘accept’ other parts of India, but you should speak our language. This is not all from a patronizing point of view. This is totally from a ‘self-respect’ view. We don’t hurt anyone else’s self-esteem nor do we let someone hurt ours.

கபாலிகள் நமக்கு ஏன் தேவை.

திரையரங்குகளிலும், மக்கள் மத்தியிலும் கபாலி ஜுரம் அடக்கினாலும் இணையம் முழுவதும் இன்றளவும் தொடர்ந்து விவாதக்களனாகவே உள்ளான் கபாலி. மாற்றுக் கருத்துக்கள், சண்டைகள், வம்புகள் என இப்படத்தின் ஒவ்வொரு காட்சியையும் கிழித்துத் தொங்கப் போட்ட நிம்மதியில் பலர் அடங்கக் காத்திருந்தேன். சற்றே அடங்கியது என்றளவில், இந்தப்பதிவை எழுதுகிறேன். இது பட விமர்சனம் அல்ல.

இப்படம் நல்லா இருந்தது, இல்லை என்பதையெல்லாம் மீறி ஒரு சமூகப் படமாக கபாலி விட்டுச்சென்ற செய்திகள் சில உண்டு. இச்செய்திகளை கவனித்தவர்களை விட கேட்காமலும், கேட்டும் கவனிக்காதவர்களும், கவனித்தும் மறுதலித்தவர்களுமே அதிகம்.இச்செய்திகள் தினமும் எதோ ஒருமூளையில் முனக்கிக் கேட்டிருப்போம்; ஆனால் அதை உறக்கப் பேச ஒரு உச்ச நட்சத்திரம் தேவைப்படுகிறார். நம்மிடையே இருக்கும் பெரும் பலவீனம் யார் பேசுகிறாரோ அவரின் வேர்களை கேளி செய்வது. அவை அழுக்காக இல்லை என்றாலும் கரைப்படுத்திக் கேளி செய்தல் நம் மரபு. இவ்வகையில் இப்படத்தின் மையப்புள்ளிகள் அனைவரையும் கேளிப்பொருட்களாக்கி நிம்மதி உற்றார் பலர்.

முதல் செய்தி – இது தலித் அரசியல் பேசும் படம் அல்ல. இது மலேசியா-வாழ் தமிழர்கள் ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட வரலாற்றின் பின்னணியில் கதை நாயகனின் கதை பேசும் படம். ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட என்பது இங்கே மொழி மற்றும் நிறம் சார்ந்து சித்தரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. வீரசேகரன் பேசும் ஆண்ட பரம்பரை சார்ந்த வசனங்கள் மற்றும் 2 பாடல் வரிகள் தவிர தமிழ்ச்சூழல் சாதி அரசியல் நேரடியாகப் பேசப்படவில்லை. ரஞ்சித் என்ற ஒற்றை நபரை முன்னிருந்தி இப்படம் அதை தான் பேசியது என்று குறியீடுகளாய் அடுக்குகின்றனர். அம்பேத்கரை கவனித்தவர்கள் சேகுவேராவை ஏன் கவனிக்கவில்லை. இந்தத் தொடர்ச்சி ஒரு ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட சமூகத்தில் குரல் எழுப்பிய புரட்சியாளர்கள் உளர் அதன் நீட்சியே இந்தக் கபாலி என்பதாய்தானே உள்ளது?! மக்களை ஒடுக்க காரணங்கள் பல உண்டு. அது நடந்து கொண்டே இருக்கும். இன்றே பட்டியல் இனத்தவர் மேல்சாதி என்று அறிவிக்கப்பட்டு நிலவுடைமையராய் ஆக்கப்பட்டாலும்; அதிலிருந்து பலனடைந்த சிலர்/பலர் மற்ற சாதியினரை ஒடுக்கவே முற்படுவர். பெண் சுதந்திரம் என்ற பெயரில் ஆண்களை ஒடுக்க முனையும் பெண்களை இன்று பார்க்கிறோம். ஒபாமா பதவி ஏற்ற பொழுது – “இனி எல்லாமே நாங்க தான்” என்று பொதுவெளியில் கொக்கரித்த கருப்பு இன மக்களைப் பார்த்தோம். இவ்வாறு இங்கே தடி எடுத்தவெல்லாம் தண்டல் காரனாய் மாறி மற்றவரை ஒடுக்க தயார் ஆகின்றனர். ‘ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட’ என்பதற்கு ஒற்றை அர்த்தம் கற்பிக்கத் தேவையில்லை. அவை ஒவ்வொரு காலகட்டத்திலும் மாறிக்கொண்டே வருவது.ஒவ்வோர் நில/இன/மொழி பேதம் அனைத்தும் இந்த ஒடுக்குமுறைகளின் வெவ்வெறு பரிமாணங்களை கண்டுவிட்டன. ஒடுக்குபவன் எங்குமே ஒடுக்குமுறையைப் பேச மாட்டான், எவன் அதில் வருந்துகிறானோ அவனே பேச வேண்டும், என்பதுவே உண்மையான செய்தி.

இரண்டாவது, அரசியல் மற்றும் அதிகாரம். ஒரு குழுவின் முன்னேற்றம், விடுதலை என்றுமே அதன் அரசியல் அதிகாரத்தில் மட்டுமே மையம் கொண்டுள்ளது. அதிகாரம் அற்ற சமூகம் ஒரு நிலையில் மற்றவர்க்கு அடிமைப்பட்டே தீரும். அந்த அதிகாரம் நம் தலைமுறைகளை தீர்மானிக்கிறது. அவர்களது தற்சார்ப்பைத் தீர்மானிக்கிறது. என்னால் அடிமையாய் இருக்க முடியாது என்ற நிலைப்பாட்டை ஒரு மனிதன் எடுக்கும் போது, அவன் தன் சந்ததியை விடுவிக்கும் தொடக்கப்புள்ளியில் உள்ளான்.இந்தியாவில் பல சாதிகள் இவ்வாறு முன்னேறியவையே. நம் வேலை/கல்வி இட ஒதுக்கீடு, தேர்தலில் ஒதுக்கப்பட்ட தொகுதிகள் என நடைமுறையில்  இருக்கும் பல, இந்த அதிகாரத்தின் பங்கீட்டுக்காகவே.

மூன்றாவது – ரஞ்சித் கூறிய முக்கியமான செய்தி. கபாலிகள் ஓட்டக்குப்பட்ட சமூகத்தில் பிறப்பது வேலைக்காகாது; அன்றி ஒடுக்கும் சமூகத்தில் இருந்து வர வேண்டும். இவர்களாளேயே சமூக இணக்கத்தின் உரையாடல் தொடங்கும். அது வரை மற்ற கபாலிகள் கதறினாலும் கேட்க எவரும்  இருக்கமாட்டார். பல மட்டங்களிலும் இந்த கபாலிகள் தொடர்ந்து இயங்கினாலே ஒழிய சமத்துவம், சுயமரியாதை, மனிதம் என்ற சொற்களுக்கு அர்த்தம் இல்லை என்றே அனுமானித்துக்கொள்வோம்.

இன்று உலகமே சமமாய் உள்ளது என்ற மாயையில் சாதி-ரீதியான இடஒதுக்கீட்டை எதிர்ப்பது, பொருளாதாரத்தில் பின்னடைந்தவர்களை நசுக்குவது, மொழி/இன வன்மையான கேளிகள் எனத் தொடர்ந்து கொண்டே இருக்கிறது. இவற்றை தடுக்க ஒன்றல்ல பல கபாலிகள் தேவை.

மீண்டும் – கபாலி என்பது ஒரு குறியீடு மட்டுமே.
